Responsible gambling

Betting is entertainment, not a way of earning money. Over the long run the bookmaker always has the edge — that is mathematics, not bad luck. Accepting it is the best protection there is against chasing losses.

Only risk what you can afford to lose

The money you set aside for betting should be an amount that would not affect your life if you lost it. Never bet with rent money, utility payments, credit or borrowed money.

Warning signs

If any of the following sounds familiar, it is time to take a break:

  • You bet more than you planned in order to win back what you have lost
  • You borrow money or sell belongings in order to bet
  • You hide how much you are spending from your family or friends
  • You feel anxious or irritable when you are not betting
  • Your work, studies or family relationships are suffering
  • Thinking about betting takes up a large part of your daily life

Tools for protecting yourself

Serious operators offer these tools — look for them in your account settings:

  • Deposit limit — a maximum daily, weekly or monthly amount
  • Loss limit — a maximum loss over a given period
  • Session limit — a restriction on the time you spend on the site
  • Time-out — a temporary freeze on the account
  • Self-exclusion — a long-term closure of the account

If an operator does not offer these tools, or makes setting a limit difficult, that tells you a great deal about the operator.

Getting help

Gambling addiction is a treatable condition and asking for help is not a weakness. International and free sources:

If someone close to you is worried, listen to them. Often the person who first notices the problem is not the player themselves.

Forbidden to anyone under 18

Betting is only for people aged 18 and over. To restrict children's access you can use filtering software such as Net Nanny or FamiSafe.
